Aromatherapy - How Does
it Work?
Essential
oils have a unique effect due to the complexity
of their chemical structure. An individual essential
oil could contain approximately 230 or more distinct
volatile molecules. It is because of their diffusibility
that they can be placed amongst the healing plant
resources for all living beings. Essential oils
are used as a 'whole' and pure plant essence,
the appearance of side effects is greatly diminished
and hence their correct use is relatively safe.
Due
to the transdermal diffusion of essential oils
they can be applied easily to the skin to gain
beneficial effects. The recognised healing effect
of essential oils is thought to be carried out
mainly through tissue stimulation. This quality
refers to the healing and regenerating action
of certain essential oils. Essential oils have
an analgesic neutralizing effect upon the chemicals
carried by nerve endings in response to injury.
This is generally felt as pain and the effect
of neutralization leads to the absence of pain
or discomfort.
The
anti-inflammatory effect is achieved by the inhibition
of the local inflammatory response and neutralization
of chemical reactions caused by injury. Essential
oils act directly on the brain centres, which
have a regulating effect on the pituitary gland
known as the hypophysis, through hormones with
the rest of the endocrine system. Specific essential
oils are able to regulate endocrine dysfunctions
and immune disorders.
Essential
Oils are able to re-establish harmony and balance
or ground a person to achieve a state of equilibrium,
in addition to restoring well-being through the
body and mind connections.
