KUNDALINI YOGA as taught by Yoga Bhajan, PHD
The Mother of all Yogas Materialised Spirituality in a Virtual Age Kundalini Yoga is not just a technology for the age; it is also a spiritual science for the future. The planet and all who live on it are experiencing the struggle that goes with transition and transformation. In astrological terms we are on the cusp between the Piscean and Aquarian ages.
However the ages of humanity stretch much further in time than mere astrological cycles. Over hundreds of thousands of years we live nothing more than a year in cosmic terms. In terms of human evolution we have passed the summer season and are now experiencing the storms of autumn.
What follows is a peaceful winter. In this age of rapid and accelerating change there is a call for, and a need of, practices with immediate effects. This is not just to satisfy a modern culture of denying causes and suppressing the symptoms of our unhealthy lifestyles.
It is also very appropriate in times of uncertainty where our nervous system is under a lot of pressure and there is more information coming at us than our minds can cope with. Kundalini Yoga is the science of sequence, rhythm and sound, working on every aspect of the body, mind and soul. It is an ancient system to conquer the mind, expand consciousness, improve health, flexibility and creativity and overall self-maintenance.
Unique in its combination of dynamic exercises (asanas in motion), combined with breathing (pranayama), mental concentration, integrating meditation, mudra and mantra, Kundalini Yoga is taught in specific sequences of exercises to create a very precise and certain effect.
Its comprehensive nature, which includes the many teachings of Yogi Bhajan, makes it a perfect tool for the requirements of the transition to the Aquarian Age. We live in an age where burn-out and stress symptoms are less the exception and more and more common place. Our concern needs not only be with our material survival. Nor is it enough to adjust our life style for the sake of the planet's ecology. Ultimately it is only the soul that remains. Each individual must ask themselves if they wish to be a Soul Survivor.
If so then it is essential to know your real self, to have a strong nervous system and a balanced glandular system for increased stabillity and focus, as well as an accumulation of spiritual vitality. These are some of the benefits from practicing Kundalini Yoga.
With the breakdown of extended family structures and traditional community networks there is also a need to discover new forms of human community.
The Internet seems to present the obvious alternative but in reality it is a sad compensation for deep need in the heart of all beings. It takes the meeting with other human beings to awaken our sense of humanity. It is only through human interaction that we can heal the human wounds. We are most human when we meet in a shared rather than a private space, hence the importance of events like the Great British Yoga Festival. True community is a bridge between the individual soul and the universal soul. In a shared space with other human beings we learn to serve and to accept being served. The attitude of gratitude is inspired and the possible human is discovered.
All who enter the Kundalini Yoga ambience find the general atmosphere to be peaceful and uplifting. In this way it is an oasis in the midst of a culture where anonymity and the intellect tend to rule. It is acknowledged that one cannot learn Kundalini Yoga from a book. To attend a class is to partake in a conscious sense of community.
When people meditate, chant or pray together then the effects of the practice are exponential and multiplied many times over. Give your soul access to a new breath and a new future. For details of classes in the UK & Ireland visit www.gbyf.co.uk or www.kundaliniyoga.org.uk
About Yogi Bhajan
Kundalini Yoga was brought into the West in 1968 by Yogi Bhajan. Up until then it was kept secret by monks and yogamasters in the Himalayan region and only passed on if a disciple proved worthy of it. Harbhajan Sing Puri, born 26 August 1929 in Kot Harkarn, district of Gujaranwala in what is now Pakistan, then part of India. He studies Kundalini Yoga, Tantric Yoga and Gong Meditation under Sant Hazare Singh. At the age of 16 he was master of Kundalini Yoga. He holds a Phd. in Psychology, he used to be a government officer, married in 1953, has 3 children, went to America and taught Kundalini yoga (inspired by Guru Ram Das who appeared to him in the etheric). In 1971 he became Master of White Tantric Yoga, the Mahen Tantric, he died in 2004 at the age of 75.
Why is Kundalini Yoga so powerful?
Kundalini yoga is vast, like going to university,
it brings together 7 types of yoga all in one:
Bhakti Yoga (devotional yoga, transcending self through love, discipline of love and devotion),
Jappa Yoga (reciting mantras),
Shakti Yoga (personal power and potential of individual),
Raja Yoga (royal yoga to study psychic centres, development of mental faculties),
Hatha Yoga (balancing polarities, cultivating the body, emphasis on flexibility and patience),
Mantra Yoga (use of sound to project and protect the mind) and Laya yoga (merging finite with infinite using sound and mantras with rhythm).
You can raise your awareness and your kundalini energy very quickly with K.Y. What can it do for you…

• This supreme technology aids to awaken your awareness to
take you back to your original self

No matter what we achieve, our successes are hollow unless we fulfil the soul's yearning to bring higher consciousness into our daily lives.
Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, is much more than a system of physical exercise; it's a dynamic, powerful tool for expanding awareness. An integrated and authentic system of exercise, breath control and meditation that has been practiced in India for millennia, it's safe, comprehensive and simple. It promotes physical health, stimulates the mind's potential and touches one's innermost being.
This is a yoga for householders..
For people who have to cope with the daily challenges and stresses of holding jobs, raising families, and managing careers. You don't have to leave your home, become an ascetic, or sit in a cave.
Even spending three minutes a day meditating or stretching into a Kundalini Yoga posture at your desk provides benefit. Of all the technology and wisdom that Yogi Bhajan could have taught from his vast storehouse of experience and mastery, he chose Kundalini Yoga and meditation because it is so effective, comprehensive, and "do-able."
Kundalini yoga is based on kriyas, or specially formulated sets of exercises. This allows you to target specific benefits and work on exactly those aspects of yourself that need work at the current time. Any amount of time spent practicing - whether three minutes or an hour a day - produces significant benefits, and in turn, motivate individuals to dedicate more time to its practice.
Practicing Kundalini Yoga keeps the body in shape and trains the mind to be strong and flexible in the face of stress and change. It increases oxygen capacity, boosts blood flow, balances the glandular system, strengthens the nervous system, and reduces stress-induced toxins such as adrenaline and cortisol.
The effect is a heightened self-awareness and vitality that allows you to harness mental and emotional energy. Individuals feel more in control of themselves, with enhanced peace of mind, concentration, and a deep inner calm and self-confidence.
No matter what someone's age or physical capacity is, Kundalini yoga and meditation can have immediate benefits.
BEFORE CLASS - INFO
Please don’t have a full meal 2 – 3 hours before class, otherwise blood and energy will be tied up in the digestive process instead of being available for yoga, light snack is ok.
Fine to drink water before and during class. I will provide water for you. Alcohol and drugs do not mix with K.Y., this is for your own safety.
During the Kriya we take off socks so the prana life force energy can flow better. Loose natural clothing made from cotton or silk are recommended. What you may want to bring – this is just optional: You may wear white, your aura expands with white already
by 30 %, a white head cover will protect and contain the energy, a shawl (light blanket in a light colour, possibly white), I can provide a thicker blanket but a lighter one would be recommended when you sit in meditation.
You may bring a sheep skin to sit on it insulates you from the floor. Cotton or silk clothing, also for head cover and shawl, are best for your energy and it relaxes the psyche. Wool is also recommended.
You are responsible for your body, so please listen to your body - Breath of fire – not during menstruation (only if you feel comfortable with it).
Don’t practice if you have had any alcohol or drugs or you have an infection, in the middle of a flu, strained ligaments, fever, swollen glands, sharp pain anywhere
If you get exhausted, stop for a moment, then start again, that is fine (build up resistance, you will strengthen your nervous system and get less stressed in daily life)
If you can’t do an exercise, skip it or do what you can do. Teacher can give you an alternative usually
If there is any sharp, shooting pain, stop the exercise – this is “bad pain”.
“Good pain” will normally ease up during rest. Can be overcome by breathing slowly, holding the posture (good pain is caused by toxins building up in muscles, keep going, the energy will flow better afterwards and you may shake, shout, cry if you wish.
Avoid bouncing, muscles will only tighten - Don’t be competitive or push spine or neck aggressively
Make slow consistent movements - Lower back flattened against the floor when doing leg lifts, engage abdominal muscles
With high blood pressure – come slowly out of postures and relaxation,
No inverted postures if menstruating or high blood pressure. - no headstand in kundalini yoga, only shoulder stand (also not during menstration)
Stick to 11 min relaxation after the Kriya in your practice at home. It is necessary for your nervous system to integrate the changes!!
If you feel sick, drink water, it will pass through, keep going - shaking during exercise is fine, it means your nervous system is growing!, new pathways are being created - More flexibility will come as you exhale properly - In case you get a headache after K.Y., it means your body is detoxifying which is a good sign and it won’t last long, see the recommendations below.
How to support the cleansing process (which may be trigged by your K.Y. practice)
- Go to bed early each night to aid the natural self-cleansing
process of body.
- Drink a lot of water during the day, so the body can clean itself
through sweat and urination.
- Drink yogi tea or other cleansing tea’s
- Cold showers to improve circulation and cleansing
- Cleansing diet (green diet, cleanses liver and stomach) ask me
for details….I can make you copies of recipes if you are
In case you experience Headaches after class:
It is a natural cleansing process as K. Y. stimulates so that toxins that are stored in the muscles are released into the circulation so they can be eliminated through the kidneys, lungs, intestines and skin. However before waste can leave the body, this temporarily makes the blood slightly toxic in people who are sedentary.
After Class Continue to drink plenty of water
You may stay in the energy created and not take a shower soon afterwards
Why do we take socks off during the Kriya?
Feet have nerve endings (for all parts of body and are the major exchange areas for Prana between you, the Sun energy and Earth energy. Bare feet maximizes the flow of energy and helps to cleanse and vitalize.
Contra-indication high blood pressure – come out slowly, no inverted postures during menstruation - no breath of fire – only long deep breathing instead and no shoulder stand during menstruation no inverted posture Pregnancy - no breath of fire, nothing to raise blood pressure, no inverted postures, no navel work, good: butterfly, walking is good for pregnant women, strong kidneys of mother determine how strong the baby will be in life.
Don’t do K. Y. when you have fever, swollen glands, infections, in the middle of flue, sprained ligaments, sharp pains
My own background
When I attended my first Kundalini Yoga class, I knew that it was perfect – K. Y. works - , nothing needed changing. Only later on in my teacher training I found out that the Kriya’s taught are thousands of years old and are perfect for greatest benefit and that teachers are not allowed to change the sequence or leave out exercises. I am very excited to teach Kundalini Yoga now and to share this ancient technology with you. Every class feels like a journey to me and my students – a journey that we are travelling together. Like a celebration of our Infinite. You will feel different after each class, see for yourself! or
